Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, more commonly known as Nearly Headless Nick, is the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter universe. He first appears in *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone*.
Nick earned his moniker due to an imperfect execution. While condemned to be beheaded for a bungled magical fix of Lady Grieve's teeth, the executioner's blunt axe failed to sever his head completely. He received forty-five blows, leaving his head hanging by a mere thread of skin and sinew.
As a ghost, Nearly Headless Nick is a friendly and somewhat pompous figure. He deeply desires to be included in the Headless Hunt, a society for ghosts who have been fully decapitated, but is repeatedly rejected due to the lingering connection of his head to his neck.
